Of 25 popular apps tested at launch, 60% hadn't been updated for the iPhone Duo — most just stretch across the big screen showing no more content, with black bars and cramped buttons.
WeChat has promised a Duo version but hadn't shipped it. The bright spots: Safari works like a desktop browser, split-screen multitasking is solid, and Apple has ordered developers to finish adaptation by next April. Buy now and you're an early adopter of the software too — not just the hardware.
One reviewer tested 25 popular apps at launch: 60% had not been updated for the Duo at all. Unoptimized apps on the inner display don't show more content — they just stretch to fill the space, often showing the same or even less information. Messaging apps show the same handful of messages; you have to rotate 90° for a better view, adding two fiddly steps to every glance.
Reviewers independently converged on the same three tiers:
| Tier | What it looks like | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Optimized | Layouts redesigned for both screens; genuinely more content | Apple Books, Netflix, 爱奇艺, 飞书, Instagram, Carrot Weather |
| Usable | Stretches without breaking; tolerable black bars | YouTube, some games |
| Not optimized | Giant black bars, cramped buttons, or completely broken | Spotify, Google Maps, Waze, Discord, X, Blackmagic Camera |
Worst case: Blackmagic Camera can't tell up from down on the Duo — completely unusable. And you cannot install iPad versions as a workaround; the Duo refuses the iPad app package outright.
The question every Chinese buyer asks: WeChat has promised a Duo-optimized version but hadn't shipped it when reviewers tested — the current build runs stretched. Tencent's other apps were in the same boat. Given WeChat is the single most-used app in China, this alone is a reason to wait if you're a heavy WeChat user.
The surprise winner: Safari. Web pages don't need developer updates — most take advantage of the extra width, and the Duo's Safari works almost like a desktop browser with visible, flickable tabs. For reading, research, and shopping, the browser experience is already the Duo's best software story.
Split-screen multitasking also works: drag photos and links between apps, pair two apps to open together, video on top while browsing below. Limits: split is locked at 50:50 with no resizing (iPad allows it), and portrait split-screen is very limited.
Apple has given developers a hard deadline: next April to finish Duo adaptation. Reviewers estimate ~6 months before the ecosystem feels meaningfully better, and Apple's track record of dragging developers along (see: Apple Silicon transition) is genuinely strong. But banking apps and niche tools could take a year or more — some will never update. If you buy at launch, budget for months of 'this app looks wrong' moments.
