Best Smart Home Hubs for Large Homes 2026: What Reviewers Agree On

Last updated: 2026-10-26 | Based on 6 YouTube reviews

📌 Bottom line (quotable): Based on 6 independent YouTube reviews (data current as of 2026-10-26), the best Smart Home Hubs for Large Homes for most buyers in 2026 is the eero Pro 6E ($199-249). In a large house the hub is only as good as the network under it, and the eero Pro 6E solves both at once: a Wi-Fi 6E mesh with a Thread border router and Zigbee support, so devices at the far end of the house stay reachable. Five of six reviewers picked it for big floor plans because coverage, not features, is what actually breaks first.

Quick Comparison

What Reviewers Agree On

✅ Common Pros

• eero Pro 6E: mesh coverage reached outbuildings that a single router did not (5/6 mention)
• Hubitat Elevation C-8 Pro: Z-Wave mesh strengthened as more mains devices joined (4/6 mention)
• Homey Pro: one app covered devices across every room and protocol (3/6 mention)
• Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2: Thread extended reach for battery sensors (2/6 mention)

❌ Common Cons

• eero Pro 6E: Zigbee support lacks vendor-specific features (3/6 mention)
• Hubitat Elevation C-8 Pro: range still needed a second hub for a detached garage (3/6 mention)
• Home Assistant Green: needs USB radios and careful placement for range (2/6 mention)
• Homey Pro: single unit, so a large house may need a second one (2/6 mention)

⚠️ Real-World Pain Points (from hands-on reviews)

• Range is the problem no spec sheet solves: reviewers with long houses and thick walls found a single hub could not reach both ends, and the answer was a second hub or a stronger mesh.
• Battery devices are the first to drop, and reviewers report that sensors at the edge of range work for months then start missing events without any warning in the app.
• Z-Wave and Zigbee meshes depend on mains-powered devices, so reviewers who fitted mostly battery sensors discovered their network was weaker than the device count suggested.

Detailed Breakdown

eero Pro 6E

A mesh router that also acts as a Thread border router and, on this model, a Zigbee hub. The appeal is consolidation: one box for Wi-Fi, Thread and some Zigbee devices instead of three.

Hubitat Elevation C-8 Pro

A local-first hub built for people who want their automations to run on the box, not in a data centre. Rule Machine is powerful and unglamorous: it can express almost anything, and it will not hold your hand.

Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2

The current SmartThings-compatible hub, adding Thread and a faster processor to the formula. It keeps working through internet outages for local devices, which the first generation did not.

Homey Pro

The hub for people who own devices from six brands and want one app: Homey Pro speaks nearly every protocol, runs everything locally and lets you build flows that mix vendors. The price is the entry fee for that freedom.

Home Assistant Green

Official hardware for Home Assistant, preinstalled and ready to boot. It removes the installation barrier but not the configuration one: the power here is integrations measured in the thousands, and the cost is time.
